Patterns, proportion and fabric direction

Cola's Library | Patterns, Proportion and Fabric Direction by Teddy Castle

Cola's Library is about reading a pattern before cutting it. Pattern pieces, seam allowance, grain and pile direction all affect the final bear.

Read before you cut: Check every marking, mirror pair and direction arrow before placing the pattern on fabric.

Respect pile direction: The fur direction changes the expression and shape of the bear, especially around the face and limbs.

Think in three dimensions: A flat pattern becomes a round body after sewing, turning, joints and stuffing.

Pattern markings

Small marks help the pieces meet correctly.

Balanced proportion

Head, body and limbs should feel intentional together.

Slow cutting

Careful cutting gives the later steps a better beginning.

A Small Note From Teddy Castle

This step comes before stuffing and facial finishing. Teddy Castle treats pattern direction as one of the quiet foundations of a well-made bear.
